History

History qualifications will allow you to understand change and how the society we live in came to be.

Studying History will allow your child to learn the ability to locate, study and interpret written and visual material, in order to extract evidence and meaning. They will learn skills like communication and how best to express their findings clearly and effectively. It is also highly regarded by many employers and universities.

Other subjects can be organised on an individual basis. Please speak to the Admissions Officer for more details.

Course Length

One or two years.

Why study it and what skills does it develop?

GCSE

History is fundamentally the study of the past: of the individuals, societies, cities and other structures that once were, and the causes and explanations of their development and demise. It introduces students to a wide range of people and events crucial to the twentieth century. The subject develops the ability to argue effectively and teaches students how to critically evaluate source material.

A level

History is a venerable and rigorous academic subject that is respected by every university. It will develop your analytic and evaluative skills through confrontation with both source material and the competing historical explanations it has led to. It will teach you how to articulate cogent arguments in a clear written form. These are skills that will benefit you across a range of subjects and beyond.

What prior knowledge and skills are required?

GCSE

You need the ability to analyse events and to express ideas in a concise fashion.

A level

A GCSE in History is not a prerequisite. You will need the ability to read substantial quantities of text with a critical eye and to write clearly and concisely. It is important to bear in mind that at this level it is not a matter of retaining and deploying a lot of information but rather a matter of drawing upon it selectively to construct a persuasive argument.

Testimonial

“As a parent that had struggled with my son’s A-level education, I was relieved to find London Brookes College. It was the only College that offered what my son needed. They helped him prepare for two A-levels and one AS in one year.I must say that I found the staff very, very friendly in all departments who really went out of their way to help him with his unique needs. Needless to say, the teachers were excellent and always approachable. With the college support as well as support from home, my son’s life has completely turned around. He was deemed a failure by a state school and was told to do an apprenticeship which made him very depressed. Thanks to London Brookes College he is now completely transformed child and extremely happy to get a place at a very good university. I found the fees to be quite reasonable and flexible in terms of the level of support you need and can afford. Certainly worth every penny.THANK YOU ALL AT LONDON BROOKS COLLEDGE. Eternally Grateful Parent.”

Her teachers are very supportive and give her plenty of guidance in the required practicals and other aspects of the course. The Principal and support staff are also very friendly and professional in their dealings with students and parents. Overall, the students are very pleased with the learning environment and the opportunity that the college offers to students wishing to sit a wide range of A levels including practical subjects like science..”
