One or two years.
Why study it and what skills does it develop?
Literature at GCSE is a tremendously exciting experience leading students to a greater and more informed enjoyment of literature and ultimately to a greater understanding of themselves, of others and of the world around them. The primary aim of the course is to encourage the candidate’s own response to literary texts, that enjoyment taking a variety of forms, both critical and imaginative.
English Literature is a challenging and rigorous academic subject that will be well-respected by any university. It will develop your skills of textual analysis and critical interpretation. You will understand how to look beneath the surfaces of texts to draw out layers of meaning and how to express your thoughts in a clear and precise written form. It is a perfect complement to other essay-based subjects.
What prior knowledge and skills are required?
You need to take delight in the close reading and analysis of texts.
You will need at least a B in GCSE English. You will need a love of literature and the desire to study it in depth. Not all students beginning the course are particularly keen readers; it is hoped that they will become so by the end of the course!
How is the course structured?
“London Brookes is a good school because it provides the students with a chance to gain individual attention along with extra classes if and when needed. Personally, LBC has helped me attain a high level despite starting 2 months into the academic year. Highly recommend this school”
